Che Guevara's Motorcycle Diaries companion Granado dies

Alberto Granado met Che Guevara when the two were children

Alberto Granado, the motorcycle companion of Ernesto Che Guevara, has died in Cuba at the age of 88.

The pair's eight-month journey around Latin America was immortalised in the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries.

The journey, started in 1951, exposed the two medical students to deep poverty and social injustice and awoke Guevara's revolutionary convictions.

After helping Fidel Castro overthrow Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959, Guevara invited Granado to Cuba.

Cuban state media said he died of natural causes in Havana.

After arriving in Cuba in 1961, Granado taught biochemistry at Havana University.

His body is to be cremated and according to his wishes, the ashes are to be spread in Cuba, Argentina and Venezuela, Cuban television said.

Granado was born in Cordoba, Argentina, on 8 August 1922 and met Guevara as a child.

The film of their travels around Latin America on the motorcycle they called La Poderosa - The Powerful - was based on diaries both men kept.

Che Guevara was killed in Bolivia in 1967 as he tried to lead a revolution there.

In the 2004 film, Granado was played by Argentine actor Rodrigo De la Serna. Gael Garcia Bernal played Che.

Members of the King Solomon's Ashlars Lodge and representatives of Captain Mulligan's made a timely donation to Special Olympics BVI (SOBVI) at the BVI Water Sports Centre yesterday.

The donation was derived from funds gained from a Graffiti Party - the Lodge's fundraising event which was held at Mulligan's. The donation is a timely one as SOBVI has set an ambitious goal to send a team and officials to the World Games which will be held in Athens, Greece in June.

The water competition will be held off the shore of Athens at the Schinias Sailing Academy, with the backdrop of an ancient Roman city where the games originally started.

Making the donation was Worshipful Master, Rhodni Skelton who said that the Lodge intends to donate a grand total of $1000, which will include a further donation during SOBVI's Mile of Quarters fundraising drive to be held soon.

"From the inception of the Special Olympics, we agreed that we will make this [SOBVI] one of our charities so we have helped them [previously] with the Mile of Quarters, annual fundraisers and now that they are heading off to Greece to compete in the World Games, we thought we would try our best to contribute," Skelton told the media.

He explained that some proceeds from the Graffiti Party will also go toward restoration plans for the Huntum's Ghut Recreation Park and a project to repaint the Pediatric Ward of the Peebles Hospital.

Skelton thanked Captain Mulligan's, the Ladies of SASS, Roadtown Wholesale, Royal Shop and Kenny Tees. He noted that Stafford Hall Court #205, a female body of the Prince Hall Masonry also ably assisted.

Randy George of Captain Mulligan's said that they were happy to provide assistance for the fundraiser. Captain Mulligan's has been involved in many other such projects.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Alison Knights Bramble thanked Skelton and all others who provided assistance. Bramble noted that since the formation of the SOBVI, they have been "wonderfully surprised by everybody in the society" who have made donations.

"We have a major event [World Games] coming up. It's an event that happens every four years. It's the largest sporting event in the world this year and it's in Greece, so it's a long, long way away. It's going to cost an amazing amount of money to take nine people. This contribution really helps a lot and it's wonderful that the numbers are slowly, but surely rising," Bramble stated.

She noted that Special Olympics BVI is hoping to raise $35,000 towards the trip and so far they are less than 50 percent away from their goal.

"We have had some really wonderful contributions from corporate companies which were incredibly important, but at the end of the day it comes down to if the community is willing and able to contribute to our Mile of Quarters which is our official campaign for this event," Bramble stated.

Team BVI will depart on June 17 and return on July 6.

The team comprises Akeem David, Delroy Gordon, Elsa Meyers, Glenford Gordon, Jaye Noel, Lenford Pope, Head of Delegation Lorna Dawson, Head Coach Alison Knights Bramble and Assistant Richard Chee Young.

I am not Masonic or a Lodge member, but I do read and think for myself and what I know is that NO Christian has the right to judge anyone, with all that they have done. They can try to separate themselves from the Catholic church but the FACT is they all sprang from it. And like T2DB said, I'm waiting for someone to give me the old, "your reading it wrong". Here is my question, if the word of God (Bible) is inspired word from God then should the readers be inspired also? Why go through the problem of writing it if you know it can and will be interpreted wrongly? Wouldn't the translators be inspired too? So much of what we see today we are told that, "that's not what it really meant, it got lost in translation"
"Storm".......I see these men doing good, but i also hear bad rumors, but the thing is, i dont see you doing any good, but i also hear bad about you, so far, your loosing this competition. Didnt your bible say we shall know you by your works?

Catholics believe in God, are all Catholic Priests child molesters? NO! Are all BVIslanders lazy, unproductive and backwards? NO! Are all Churches, albeith they believe in 'God' the same? No! So if this is the case, why are Lodges called devil worshippers?

If I can recall correctly, this very Lodge was not only invited but given a PLATFORM at the New Life Baptist Church not too long ago! Some people bickered and moaned QUIETLY but every Sunday you have to drive carefully pass there because of how many cars parked to 'worship'. SO then, if they're devils, why haven't the 'Christians' abandoned this particular church that invited them to worship with them?

I know many Lodge men here in BVI who are ACTIVE members of MANY different churches and they don't hide the fact that they're Masons. BUT, they're not kicked out of the churches! So, if they're devilish why are they allowed in the churches when people know that they're Masons? You realise how STUPID you sound now or should I continue?

My name is Robert M. Wright, most folks call me "Storm" My opinions on the Masons are well known, have been published throughout the territory and I stand behind everything that I have ever written.

The problem that I have today is with my Cristian Brothers and Sisters who write representing the light yet still stand in the darkness on hidden names on these online news sites.

Is it that we are ashamed to speak our God based feelings? Is it that we are afraid of whatever causes us to hide? Do we serve a big God? Or has all we accuse the lodge of being run us into corners and caves.

Where are the leaders of the church? Why are they so silent on this matter? Where are the leaders on the Christian Council? Where are the leaders of the various associations who labor in God's name?

The KSA members are standing up for what they believe. They are out in the light of day.
Why can't the Christian community do the same thing . . . .Stand up for what we believe in the light of day.

If we are going to speak, let us peak out openly in faith without fear.

I spoke these words to R. Skelton this morning.

That being said we a s a body of believers need to stand up and speak our feelings. Again I ask the Christian Community and our leaders What are we afraid of? Where are our voices?

Tomorrow, March 2, 2011 will mark 40 years since the formation of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and members are in high gear for events planned for the celebration.

Last evening, past President of the party, Carvin Malone said the party has an entire calendar of events planned for the celebration which will run throughout this month.

Premier and leader of the VIP, Hon. Ralph T. O'Neal commented that the party has brought back hope to the BVI.

"I am all for celebrating the 40th anniversary...I am not a founding member, but even as a civil servant I supported the VIP...I think we should do something about it because it is the party that has done quite a bit for the Territory and brought hope alive," said the Premier.

Malone gave special thanks to the nine members who signed the charter back in 1971, including the late H. Lavity Stoutt, Terrence B. Lettsome, Randolph Malone, Donald Pickering, Joseph Skelton and Naomi Turnbull.

Deputy Premier Hon. Dancia Penn also joined in the congratulations.

The VIP was originally formed by H. Lavity Stoutt when he left the United Party then led by Willard Wheatley. Since its inception, the party has only been led by two men - H. Lavity Stoutt and Hon. Ralph T. O'Neal. Mr. Stoutt and Hon. O'Neal are also the only two politicians in the history of the Territory to have held non-consecutive terms of office as either Chief Minister or Premier.

BVI politricks and the real deal...is this the reality ?

Ratman's wife hit the nail on the head.

"The chance of either happening: slim to none. The taxi lobby is simply too powerful and elections are coming up. Parochial interests far outweigh any thought of the public good or creating a competitive tourist product. The same thing explains the presence of lots of big cruise ships."

Indeed there is a very incestuous relationship between elected officials and the Taxi constituency in the bvi. It is not at all unlike current controversies in the states over collective bargaining rights for public workers. The problem comes in when those regulating or determining income and benefits are beholding to the union and commit to long term damaging policy to garner financial support for the next election. Nothing wrong with unions and collective bargaining, but it should be adversarial, not "I'll give you whatever you ask since you elected me".

Unfortunately the taxi owners wield huge political clout in the bvi. The politicians will look to the taxi interests ahead of what is in the long term best interest of tourism. The taxi industry is of course hugely dependent on cruise ship business. They see the cruise ship passenger as a lamb to be slaughtered...an endless steam of robots with cash. The government sees happy taxi drivers as a path to reelection. The old days and the reasonable fares and friendly service have been swapped for "load em up, move em out".

Like now in many states the reckoning for excess is at hand, at some point the decision to focus on the quick buck to keep a political constituency happy will backfire and cause severe pain...see Illinois, California etc. You can shear the sheep many times, but you can only eat him once.

Stop Rupert Murdoch

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Ricken Patel - Avaaz.org" <avaaz@avaaz.org>

Subject: Stop Rupert Murdoch

Dear friends,

The world's largest and most dangerous media baron wants to buy nearly half of the British mass media, boosting his power to undermine global efforts on everything from peace to the environment. We only have 48 hours to press the UK government to stand up and stop Rupert Murdoch:

In 48 hours, nearly half the British mass media could be bought by one of the world's worst media moguls.

Rupert Murdoch has exploited his vast media empire to push war in Iraq, elect George W Bush, spread resentment of muslims and immigrants, block global action on climate change, and undermine democracy by viciously smearing politicians who refuse his orders.

A lock on British media will massively boost Murdoch's power to undermine global efforts on peace, human rights and the environment. The UK is up in arms over the Murdoch bid, and even the Murdoch-allied government is split down the middle as it makes a decision this week. Global solidarity bolstered Egypt's pro-democracy protesters -- it can help Britain's. Let's build an urgent global outcry to stop Rupert Murdoch. Sign the petition to UK leaders:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_rupert_murdoch_3/?vl

Murdoch undermines democratic government across the world by threatening elected leaders with viciously biased media coverage unless they do his bidding. He has manipulated US, British and Australian democracy for years, but now he wants more complete control. In the US, most of the likely Republican presidential candidates are actually paid employees of Murdoch! When his Fox News Network was shunned by Barack Obama as a mere propaganda mouthpiece, it spawned the far right "tea party" and broadcast constant, often hate-filled attacks against Obama and his healthcare and peace agenda -- resulting in a huge win for Republicans in the 2010 congressional elections.

We can turn the tide on this powerful threat to democracy. Last year, Murdoch had lunch with the Canadian Prime Minister, who sent his chief aide to set up a murdoch-style political propaganda TV network in Canada. A mass outcry from Canadian Avaaz members prevented this network from being funded by taxpayer money, and just last week, another mass campaign from Avaaz prevented the Canadian government from removing the journalistic standards that would prevent this new network from spreading lies to the public. This week the battleground is the UK. The fight against Murdoch has just begun, but already we've begun to win. Click below to keep up the pressure:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_rupert_murdoch_3/?vl

The power of Avaaz and of this moment in our world's history, is the power of unity. Across the Arab world and beyond, people are coming together in common cause across all boundaries. Murdoch's power is the ability to divide. His networks use fear and misinformation to divide left from right, citizens from foreigners, muslim from western, immigrants from non-immigrants, etc. Murdoch knows that democracy must be divided before it can be conquered. This week, let's show him what unity looks like.

With hope,

EDITORS' NOTE: Reuters and other foreign media are subject to Iranian restrictions on their ability to film or take protest-fun-ures in Tehran. Iranians hold up a poster (L) showing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with art student Sanee Zhaleh who was killed on Monday's protest rally, and posters featuring altered images of opposition leaders (C), during a pro-government rally following Friday prayers in Tehran February 18, 2011. A senior Iranian cleric said on Friday there was no need to hang opposition chiefs as their influence was already dead -- a softer line that reflected reluctance to make martyrs out of leaders of the Green movement. Friday prayers leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, who heads the hugely influential state Guardian Council, said calls to hang them were superfluous as they and their movement were as good as dead already.

Wikileaks Stoned Again

18 February 2011

Hello Cryptome / Mr John Young.

I recently posted my research on some aspects of the debate surrounding Wikileaks and the concept of free information flow in general.

In my report I mentioned Cryptome. If you have the time and would like to comment on what I've written, I would appreciate it.

The Casting of Stones at Assange by the Disenchanted

Thank you for your attention.

Karl F. Stewart

__________

Dear Mr. Stewart,

Thank you for pointing to your report. My responses which are substantiated by files here:

http://cryptome.org/0003/wikileaks-series.htm

1. My agreed role in Wikileaks was limited to allowing my name to be used as registrant for the domain name (I have done this for several parties who wished to conceal their identity). This request came from an anonymous person.

2. I was subsequently placed on a private mail list without being asked. I offered comments there.

3. An unknown person posted a message on that mail list suggesting a target of up to $5 million dollars to be raised in 6 months. I objected to that stating that such a sum of money could only come that quickly from an organization like Soros or the CIA.

4. I also suggested a slow build-up of credibility before soliciting funds.

5. After contentious debate I was summarily unsubscribed from the mail list after I said I would publish the mail list contents, which I did.

6. There was little contact with Wikileaks for several years except for being sent an archive of its holdings during a period when it was under threat to be shut down.

7. Cryptome does not do what Wikileaks does and it is unfair to both and inaccurate to make that claim. Cryptome is not a leak site and resents being labeled that way for it distorts our purpose to be a library with no desire for publicity. We do not solicit press coverage, send out press releases, hold press conferences, make accusations, brag about our work, plead for funding. We do not attempt to keep our operation secret -- that would be a conflict with our role as a public library. We do not sell information or make deals with the media. We do not claim to be threatened by authorities although we have had visits from them. We do not consider Cryptome to be a journalistic endeavor and do not claim protection as journalists. We call ourselves public scholars, see the Wikipedia entry on Cryptome. We pay for Cryptome out of our pockets.

8. Since Wikileaks has received a lot of publicity with release of the gunship video and afterwards I have been bombarded with inquiries about Wikileaks. My attempts to deflect the inquiries were unsuccessful: most wanted information about Julian Assange and little about the operation of the initiative. Quite a few aimed to foster conflict between Cryptome and Wikileaks citing my early, very brief involvement and the mail list publication.

9. My critique of Wikileaks -- earliest and latest -- is intended to be constructive and to guard against praising a fledging operation due the weakening effect of excessive praise. Instead I believe Wikileaks needs greater, well-thought-out critique to assure it survives excessive glorification and demonization -- which I warned about in the earliest days and which will become more intense in the future. (I have given OpenLeaks the same advice.)

10. Focus on Julian Assange weakens Wikileaks for its purpose is more important that he is. It is a terrible trap to concentrate on him rather than Wikileaks, a trap often set by the media and those opposed to the creation of new forms of information flow. I urge you to learn more about the material published by Wikileaks since 2006, all of it, and avoid vacuous debate about Julian Assange. Julian has said the same, often. He knows that the attention paid to him is damaging Wikileaks and that that is the intention of those who do so, wittingly or unwittingly.

11. As you write, material published by Cryptome and Wikileaks is voluminous and hard to grasp, thank goodness for that burden as an alternative to easy fat food of the media. Most reporters who contact me claim they have not time to read the material, and go on to ask impertinent questions about Julian and me. They are ignorant fools working to attract eyeballs to advertisements. I hope you  are not.

12. You should withdraw your report due to its shallow comprehension of Wikileaks and Cryptome and its inane focus on Julian Assange. It shows a lack of intelligence and research, is too glib, too gossipy, too culled from and derivative of the exploitive headline flaunting media.

13. I suggest you spend six months or a year studying Cryptome and Wikileaks material, avoid trashy media brain deading, do library homework or else you will be just another exploiter and promoter of the public's as a mirror of your own ignorance. Tough comments, but that is what Wikileaks, Cryptome, you, the media and me deserve.

14. I agree the BBC Panoramo show was pure shit. I was interviewed for that and told John Sweeney, the interviewer, that BBC was ill-prepared to report on the topic. I told him BBC should do serious research before doing the show. And beyond that I told him a lot more which I assumed would never be aired the same way most of those who have interviewed me omitted the best material to report what had already decided to say.

15. I know John Sweeney to be a crook and liar. That is no secret. Pathetic that BBC allows him on the property.

This message is not private.

Best regards,

John Young

The real choice:

The real choice: Individual Liberty -vs- Government Control

By: Milo Nickels

When it comes to American politics, we all know "the rules":

Rule #1 - The fake choice.  You must chose between one of two political parties, Democrats or Republicans--otherwise, as the big fraud claims, you are simply "throwing your vote away".

Rule #2 - Your assigned beliefs.  Once you choose a party, ALL of your beliefs are decided for you.  Regardless of your personal beliefs on the individual issues, your party politicians will vote on your behalf as follows:

Issue
Democrat
Republican
Taxes
Should be higher
Should be lower
Abortion
Pro-choice
Pro-life
Defense
Spend less
Spend more
Amnesty
Let them in
Kick them out
Social Programs
Everything is a right
You get what you earn
War on Drugs
Legalize it
Keep it illegal
Death Penalty
Wrong
Fry 'Em
Govt Spending
The sky is the limit
Make some cuts
Stem Cell Research
Yes
No
War
What is it good for?
Kill 'em all...
Foreign Policy
Prop them up
Make them US
Size of Government
HUGE
huge
Church and State
Keep them separate
In God we trust
Global Warming
The end is near!!!
Junk science
Morality
Live and let live
The bible knows best
Civil Rights
They are racists
They play the race card
Gay marriage
Fair
Immoral
Economics
Give to the poor
Don't take from the rich
Role of government
Take care of me
Control me

So, if you feel really, extremely, ridiculously strongly about one of these issues (or simply agree with one side slightly more than you do the other) you can vote that way and have all the other issues decided for you.  Or, if you are split pretty evenly, you can flip a coin--what's the difference?  You can either go with the democrats where most decisions revolve around feelings, sensitivities, and the government ensuring fairness, or you can go with the republicans where most decisions revolve around religious beliefs, moralities, and the government knowing what's best.

The problem with a two party system such as ours extends beyond merely having to choose between the better of two evils.  Neither party gives you the opportunity to hold a consistent set of beliefs.  This is because neither party derives its belief structure from a consistent source.  Democrats largely rely on feelings, Republicans generally rely on morality, and both parties claim to rely on the Constitution (when it happens to agree with the democrat's feelings or the republican's morals).  Both parties use a mixture of feeling, philosophy, and agenda to define their policies and both are forced to hold conflicting stances.  You can not adhere to all the beliefs generally held within either party without being a hypocrite.

If you are a democrat, how does it make any sense to be ok with killing unborn babies, but against killing mass murderers?  How can you truly support fairness and equality for all, while you expect one class of people to be completely supported by the work of another?  How can you claim to support free expression, but also support laws against "hate speech"?

If you are a republican, how can you support the rights of people to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, but fight tooth and nail against marijuana?  How can you frame so many arguments around morality and values, but then fight against health care and bomb poor people in foreign countries into oblivion?  How can you refuse to allow illegals in because they take our jobs, but then be ok with sending our jobs out to them?

Consistency.  It simply cannot exist in a system such as ours.  Enter Libertarianism.  Libertarians try to derive all of their opinions from one source--support for individual liberty.  This happens to be the same source that was relied on when our founding fathers framed our Declaration of Independence and Constitution.  The belief structure is simple:  Government should be small and limited, and people should be able to do whatever they want as long as their actions don't hinder anyone else's ability to do the same.  People have the right to decide their own morality, and are responsible for the consequences of their decisions.  This results in far more consistency across the typical issues.  Let's re-examine the list above in a purely Constitutional / small government / individual liberty approach:

Issue
Freedom
Taxes
As low as possible
Abortion
based on personal beliefs *
Defense
Spend less
Amnesty
Keep them out
Social Programs
Your welfare is your responsibility
War on Drugs
Your welfare is your responsibility
Death Penalty
based on personal beliefs *
Govt Spending
Small Government = Small spending
Stem Cell Research
None of Government's business
War
Only when necessary
Foreign Policy
THEIR welfare is THEIR responsibility
Size of Government
SMALL
Church and State
Keep them separate
Global Warming
None of Government's business
Morality
Live and let live
Civil Rights
All men are created equal
Gay marriage
Your welfare is your responsibility
Economics
Free Market
Role of government
Protect my freedoms

*Abortion and the death penalty, are very unlikely to have a unified stance within ANY party--because they rely on personal beliefs about when someone becomes human and when someone can no longer be considered human.  Even these complex issues, where there appears to be no stance, remain completely consistent in their adherence to the Constitution (which clearly says that some issues are better left to individual states).

This is why I always implore people to re-examine their political views, and try to adjust them around a singular unified source--Personal Liberty.  Instead of framing all issues in terms of conservative vs liberal, democrat vs republican, or moral vs immoral--try framing them in terms of individual liberty vs government control.  This exercise is not easy.  Sometimes it's very difficult to do--particularly where personal moral and/or religious beliefs are involved.  You must realize that leaving your own moral and political beliefs out of politics does not mean that you are leaving them out of your life.  You can remain true to your beliefs by choosing to live your own life according to them.  You are simply making a decision not to impose your beliefs or lifestyle on other people, because you wouldn't want them to impose their beliefs or lifestyles on you.  Furthermore, if you must choose between a democrat and a republican, try to remain as true as you can to liberty--pick the candidate who does the most to increase individual liberty (and/or decrease government intervention).

It's all about consistency.  If you support individual liberty you will never be a hypocrite.
